StorytimeGR is committed to bridging the literacy gap in Grand Rapids, MI.

How we started:

StorytimeGR began 11 years ago as Storytime in the Park,  a grassroots organization, the brainchild of Dr. Barbara Lubic of Grand Valley State University. Every Tuesday evening in the summer families would connect to enjoy a story read-aloud, and a free ice cream cone and book to keep.

In 2019, the Westside Collaborative brought together Mike Nassar from the Literacy Center of West Michigan and Becca Walsh-Wolfe from ReadGR to create a  Storytime in the Park at Lincoln Park, on the city’s Westside. It was modeled after the Garfield Park SitP. Evette Pittman from the City of Grand Rapids Park and Recreation  became involved  when the city was looking for family-friendly events to hold at Joe Taylor and MLK Parks.

In the Winter of 2020, GVSU, the Literacy Center  of West Michigan,  ReadGR, and the City of Grand Rapids, along with the Grand Rapids Public Library  came together to begin planning for Storytime in the Park 2020, as a partnership. When the pandemic hit, the team realized they needed to make a new plan. Storytime in the Park wouldn’t be possible, but families, and kids, needed books more than ever.

ReadGR

ReadGR is bringing the joy of literacy home! We provide brand new books and other reading materials and literacy resources to kids and their families.

What we do:

StorytimeGR provides Storytime in the Park in 3 Grand Rapids parks: Garfield, Lincoln, and MLK every Tuesday evening June - August. Families enjoy a read-aloud story, free ice cream, and a book of their choice to take home and keep.

This year, StorytimeGR has pivoted our services in response to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. Kids and families need access to literature now, more than ever, and to address this need has been our priority. In 2020, we’re delivering books to kids and families who need them by partnering with organizations offering free food distribution.
